# Understanding Roles

> What each role can see and do in Shiftsheet.

Every user in Shiftsheet has a role that determines what they can access and do. Your role is assigned by your company admin when your account is created.

## The three roles

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Employee">
    The default role for team members. Employees can:

    * Log and submit their own timesheets
    * Request leave and track their balances
    * View their assigned work schedule
    * View assigned projects and update task progress and status
    * Add comments to tasks and leave notes on timesheet entries
    * Use the AI Assistant to draft and stage timesheet entries
    * Update their own profile and change their password

    Employees **cannot** see other people's timesheets, approve anything, or manage project members.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Manager">
    Managers can do everything an Employee can, plus:

    * Log and submit their own timesheets
    * Approve or reject timesheet entries from their direct reports
    * Approve or reject leave requests from their team
    * View and manage their team: balances, availability, and eligibility settings
    * Create and manage projects, add tasks, and manage which employees are on each project
    * Run workforce, project, and compliance reports
    * Generate and manage invoices from approved timesheet data

    Managers only see data for the employees directly assigned to them.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Company Admin">
    Company Admins have full control over the entire company workspace. They can do everything a Manager can — across all employees, not just their own team — plus:

    * Invite and manage all users, assign roles, managers, and schedules
    * Configure company rules, leave types, accrual policies, and approval workflows
    * Manage billing rates and invoice templates
    * View all approvals, reports, and audit history for the whole company

    <Note>
      Company Admins manage and oversee the company but do not log their own timesheets. If hours need to be tracked for an admin, a separate employee account should be used.
    </Note>

    There can be multiple Company Admins in one company.
  </Accordion>
