# Clocking In & Out

> How to clock in and out from your dashboard or a workplace kiosk, and how overtime/undertime gets allocated when you clock out.

Shiftsheet supports two ways to clock in and out: from your own **dashboard** while logged in, or from a shared **Kiosk** device at your workplace. Both create the same kind of time log and feed into your timesheet.

<Note>
  Company Admins don't see a Clock In control — admin accounts manage the workspace but don't log their own time.
</Note>

## Clocking in from your dashboard

Look for the **Clock In** button in the top navigation bar (or the clock card on your dashboard).

1. Click **Clock In**
2. A toast confirms you're clocked in, and the button becomes a live running timer

<Note>
  Clocking in from your dashboard always starts "now" — you can't back-date it. If you need to log time for earlier in the day, add it manually from the Timesheets page instead.
</Note>

If clocking in right now would overlap with a time block you've already entered manually today, the Clock In button turns amber with a tooltip explaining the conflict — fix or remove the conflicting entry first.

## Clocking out

Click the running timer to open the **Clock Out** summary. It shows:

* When you started and how long you've worked
* Your scheduled hours for today (or **"Flexible schedule"** if you're not on a fixed roster)

What happens next depends on how your hours compare to your schedule:

| Situation                                       | What you'll see                                                                                                                                                                                   |
| ----------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **On time** | A simple confirmation — click **Clock Out** to finish. |
| **Overtime** (or working on a rostered day off) | An allocation panel to split the extra hours across **Flexi**, **TIL**, **Paid OT**, or (on a day off) claim a full **RDO**. Quick buttons let you allocate it all to one bucket or split evenly. |
| **Undertime** | An optional panel to deduct the shortfall from your **Flexi** or **TIL** balance, or use a full **RDO** day. You can also leave it unallocated — it just shows as pending on your timesheet. |

<Warning>
  If you allocate more hours than you actually worked, the Clock Out button is disabled until you fix the split. Under-allocating is always fine.
</Warning>

Click **Keep Working** to cancel and dismiss the summary without clocking out.

## Forgot to clock out?

If a session is left running for more than **12 hours**, Shiftsheet automatically closes it at the 12-hour mark and adds a note to the entry. You'll see a message the next time you try to clock out ("your session ran past 12 hours and was clocked out automatically") — the entry is already on your timesheet, so just review and adjust the hours if needed.

## Using a workplace Kiosk

Some companies set up a shared tablet or browser at the workplace — a **Kiosk** — for clocking in and out instead of (or alongside) the dashboard. Ask your admin for the kiosk's URL or check the device at your workplace.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Tap to Clock In / Out">
    On the kiosk's idle screen, tap the button to start.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter your PIN">
    Type your 4-digit **Kiosk PIN** on the number pad. This is different from your login password.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick a project (if required)">
    If your company requires it, choose which project you're working on. You'll see your **scheduled shift** for today alongside the picker.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick a task (if required)">
    If the project has tasks assigned to you and your company requires it, select one or more — your hours split equally across whichever tasks you pick.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Clock in">
    A green confirmation shows for a few seconds, then the kiosk returns to idle.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Clocking out at the kiosk shows the same summary and overtime/undertime allocation panel described above.

<Note>
  **Open session detected**: if you still have a session running from an earlier day, the kiosk will prompt you to close it before starting a new one, rather than silently stacking sessions.
</Note>

### Setting your Kiosk PIN

Set (or change) your 4-digit Kiosk PIN from your **Profile** page — see [Your Profile](/user-guide/employees/profile#setting-your-kiosk-pin). You'll need one before you can use any kiosk.
